History

Querétaro International Airport (AIQ) (IATA code: QRO, ICAO code: MMQT) is located 32 kilometers from the capital of Querétaro. The AIQ is located in the municipalities of El Marqués and Colón, in the state of Querétaro, Mexico.

The airport began operations on November 28, 2004, as a result of a partnership between the Government of the State of Querétaro and Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA). Its opening marked the end of operations at the “Ing. Fernando Espinosa Gutiérrez” Airport in the state capital, consolidating commercial, private, and cargo operations at the new facility, as well as part of the technical and human resources that worked there.

Preparations began in 1999 with a series of studies that led to the start of construction on July 12, 2002, resulting in a major infrastructure project for the region.

Fernando Espinosa Airport began operations in 1955 as a civil aerodrome. In 1986, the state government expanded its facilities and granted its concession to ASA. In 1992, regular commercial flights began with Aerolitoral, followed by Aeromar in 1993. In 1997, it was declared an international airport, and by 2003, it had recorded 110,000 passengers and more than 11,000 operations.

Currently, AIQ is one of the airports in Mexico with safety certification granted by the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC). It was the first to obtain it in 2009 and has renewed it in 2013 and 2016. This certification is valid for three years. The airport is authorized to receive large-capacity aircraft, including models such as the Boeing 747 and the Airbus A380.
